How it works

What does the latency checker measure?

Latency is the time a request takes to travel from your device to the server and back. Lower is better.

01

Warm up the connection

The first two requests open the connection and complete the HTTPS handshake. They are thrown away so they do not inflate your result.

02

Send 10 timed requests

Your browser sends ten tiny, uncached requests to our test endpoint, one after another, and times each round trip.

03

Calculate the results

We show the minimum, average and maximum latency, the jitter between requests, and how many requests were lost or timed out.

Reading your result

What is a good latency?

How each range feels for common workloads.

LatencyRatingWhat it feels like
0–50 msExcellentInstant. Ideal for websites, APIs, RDP, gaming and trading.
50–100 msGoodSmooth for websites, eCommerce and remote desktop work.
100–200 msFairPages load fine, but RDP, voice calls and games feel a little delayed.
200+ msPoorNoticeable lag in anything interactive. Consider a server closer to your users.
Troubleshooting

What affects your latency?

Physical distance

Data travels through fibre at about two-thirds the speed of light. A server in Mumbai answers an Indian visitor far faster than one in the US or Europe.

Your ISP's routing

Traffic does not always take the shortest path. Some ISPs route through other cities, or even other countries, before reaching the server.

Wi-Fi and mobile data

Wireless connections add delay and jitter. A wired Ethernet connection usually gives the lowest and most stable latency.

Network congestion

Downloads, video streaming and other devices on the same network all compete for bandwidth and push latency up.

VPNs and proxies

Every extra hop adds time. A VPN server in another country can add 100 ms or more to every request.

Server load

An overloaded server takes longer to answer. Dedicated resources on a VPS keep response times steady under traffic.

Low-latency hosting

Serve Indian visitors from Indian servers

SkyServer VPS and Windows RDP run in Tier-3 data centres in India with NVMe storage and fast network uplinks, so your users get the lowest possible latency.

FAQ

Latency checker questions

What is a good latency (ping) for a website or server?

Under 50 ms is excellent and feels instant. 50–100 ms is good for websites, APIs and remote desktop. 100–200 ms is usable but noticeable in RDP, gaming and voice calls. Above 200 ms most interactive use starts to feel slow.

How does this latency checker work?

Your browser sends a series of tiny requests to our test endpoint and times how long each one takes to come back. The first requests only open the connection and are discarded, so the result reflects the network round trip, not the TLS handshake.

Is this the same as ping (ICMP)?

Not exactly. Browsers cannot send ICMP packets, so this test measures an HTTPS round trip instead. It is usually within a few milliseconds of a real ping and is closer to what your website visitors actually experience.

What is jitter?

Jitter is how much the latency changes from one request to the next. Low jitter (under 10 ms) means a stable connection. High jitter causes choppy voice and video calls and laggy RDP sessions even when the average latency looks fine.

Why is my latency higher than expected?

Wi-Fi interference, a busy home network, VPNs and proxies, mobile data and your ISP's routing all add delay. Try again on a wired connection with downloads paused and any VPN switched off for a cleaner number.

Why should I host my website or VPS in India?

If most of your visitors are in India, a server in India can cut 100–250 ms off every request compared with a server in the US or Europe. That means faster page loads, snappier RDP and better Core Web Vitals.
